What Causes Tonsil Stones?
What Causes Tonsil Stones?

Researchers have discovered that there are other Tonsil stone causes that can contribute to the formation of tonsil stones, and the location of them can be a factor. When tonsil stones are found in the peritoneal region of the tonsils, ectoptic tissue and abscessed calcification are usually the culprits. The location of the stones in a person’s tonsils can sometimes offer an explanation as to what caused them in the first place, but this is not always the case.

The fact is that there is no singular cause of a tonsil stone, and research is still being done to learn more.

Common Tonsil Stone Causes

You maybe suffer from Tonsil Stones and Ask yourself:

How do you get tonsil stones?

How do you get tonsil stones? Why do I get tonsil stones?

There are varying causes for Tonsil Stones. Let’s explore the most common causes of Tonsil Stones:

Time For The Tonsil Stone To Form

The longer the debris that gets lodged in the microscopic pockets of the tonsils, the harder is become, calcifying and turning into white stone-like pieces that are sometimes visible to those who have them.

Tonsil stones are typically not larger than two millimetres thick and typically do not cause any noticeable symptoms besides bad breath. Some of the other signs that a person may have tonsil stones include a sore throat, occasional ear pain, difficulty swallowing, and the feeling of something lying in the throat.

Most people who get a tonsil stone never know they have them because they do not usually present with any symptoms. Other people can experience some mild but annoying symptoms, but this is relatively rare. Those who have had repeated bouts of tonsillitis are more likely than others to develop these stones, but they can affect absolutely anyone. There are so many tiny nooks and crannies in the tonsils that it can be easy for bacteria and other debris to get stuck in them and harden over time due to the fact that they are tucked away so well.

Certain Types of Debris Can Cause A Tonsil Stone

Some of the most common types of debris that get stuck in the tonsil crypts to cause stones to form include:

  • Mucus
  • Dead cells
  • Food particles
  • Bacteria

A Tonsil stone can be as small as a single grain of rice to the size of a pea, depending on how much debris has accumulated over time. Some people develop larger tonsil stones than others, and the size of the stones can determine whether or not the person experiences any symptoms. Most of these stones do not cause any unpleasant symptoms because they are so small, but the larger ones can lead to a sore throat as well as that annoying feeling that something is stuck in your throat but you can’t get rid of it.

While tonsillitis, which is a very large tonsil stone, can be gotten rid of by surgically removing the tonsils, there are many other less severe alternatives that usually work. Tonsil stones can often be forced out by gargling salt water or certain other special mouthwashes. There have been some rare cases of people getting their tonsils removed due to unusually large stones that caused severe throat irritation, though it is not common at all.

Bacteria Can Cause A Tonsil Stone To Form

Anaerobic bacteria are found in the upper respiratory tract as well as the inner ear canal and can contribute to the formation of tonsil stones. Bacteria formation and accumulation is one of the most common causes of tonsil stones, though there are other explanations.

Food that gets trapped in the tiny tonsil crypts can harden over time and turn into white solidified chunks. The white blood cells in the body attack the objects that get stuck in the tonsils, resulting in calcified or hardened particles. These particles are usually perfectly harmless or slightly annoying at worst. A vast majority of people swallow whatever is left behind and have no idea that a tonsil stone is there in the first place. A Tonsil stone is most common in teenagers who have larger tonsils.

Poor Health causing Tonsil Stones

Another major factor that can be agreed upon is the poor health of a person. When your body is unable to keep up with its regular cleansing mechanisms, it’s because your body is unable to function properly because of its poor condition.
